Chris Ball has 30 years’ experience as a design leader with Buchan and over 40 years industry experience. His focus is on the design of retail, education, residential and commercial facilities, covering all aspects of the architectural design and delivery process. His projects include the award winning Emporium Melbourne, Chatswood Chase in Sydney, Watergardens Town Centre, the VRC Members’ Grandstand, facilities for Caulfield Grammar School, Victoria Point residential tower, and various facilities for BMW.
Edward Cassidy joined the Buchan Group as a Principal in 2017, and heads the business in China from the Shanghai studio. He has been practicing architecture internationally for 20 years throughout the UK, Middle East and the Asia Pacific region. Eddie previously led competition-winning designs and teams at leading international firms such as RMJM and Atkins. He brings a wide breadth of international design experience, having worked on projects across14 countries, and has worked at a range of scales from urban planning to the design and implementation of large scale commercial projects. He offers a unique mix of experience across a broad range of sectors including tall towers, workplace, mixed-use as well as luxury residential, educational and hotel design. Eddie’s design interests focus on energy efficient design and he has presented numerous seminars on sustainability. He has served as a visiting tutor at Tong Ji University and external examiner at the University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus.
Michael Connolly is a specialist in the master planning and delivery of major retail projects. As Project Principal he has taken a leading role on many significant developments across Australia, including Logan Hyperdome and Grand Central Toowoomba in Queensland, Star City Casino & Hotel, Westpoint Blacktown, Roselands, Tuggeranong and Stockland Nowra Shopping Centres in New South Wales, and The Galleria Morley and Kingsway City in Western Australia.
Lou Cotter has extensive experience in site and master planning, project feasibility, concept design and design on a range of architectural and interiors projects. His projects include Curtin University Aboriginal Studies Centre, the Drama Centre at PLC, Lake Joondalup Baptist College, Technology and Enterprise Centre, Curtin University Lecture Theatres, Quadrant Office Building, Kings Park Avenue Apartments, Al Fujairah Maternity Hospital, BG+E Perth Office and the Alluvion Tower. Currently, Lou is leading the Group’s team on 226 Adelaide Terrace, the One Brighton Apartments, the refurbishment of 150 St George’s Terrace, and various low rise 4.5 Star office developments.
Todd Crighton is a Director and Lead Designer for The Buchan Group in Brisbane, working on a diverse range of landmark projects. He has comprehensive knowledge and experience in master planning and design specialising in mixed use, retail and multi-residential projects. Todd’s portfolio features a range of international projects in Malaysia, Jakarta, Milan, Qingdao and Shanghai as well as projects throughout Australia. Recent projects include Element on Coolum Beach, Vision Tower, Surfers Paradise Hilton, ANA Tower, Marina Mirage redevelopment, Lunchoo and Ipswich Riverlink.
Gary brings over 20 years’ experience in architectural environmental graphics & signage for commercial, retail & mixed-use projects. His team of 10 dedicated designers and visualisers have become an integral part of The Buchan Group’s comprehensive and unique offer to Clients. His early involvement in projects with the design team ensures an integrated solution for environmental graphics and signage programs. His involvement with QIC projects dates back to the original Grand Central development and the Robina Town Centre Arbour Lane and Bazaar Street refurbishments through to the recent Northern Malls redevelopment. His current list of graphics projects are across Australia and New Zealand as well as India, Indonesia, China and The Philippines.
David Forbes has specialist expertise in the design and master planning of mixed use hotel, entertainment, residential, and retail projects, with lead roles on projects such as the Adelaide Casino redevelopment; the Star City Casino redevelopment in Sydney; No. 1 Martin Place, Sydney; Quay West Apartments, Melbourne; Conrad Jupiters Casino master plan; St Philip’s Church, Melbourne; and Christchurch Art Gallery. He has also led the practice on the Northland Shopping Centre redevelopment and the Stockland Tooronga retail project, both in Melbourne.
Rob Guild is an award-winning architect who has delivered iconic and functional designs to some of New Zealand’s leading companies. With 25 years’ experience in design, project leadership, business development, administration and management, Rob joined The Buchan Group in 2013. Since then Rob has been the project architect for the Waitakere Mega Centre, Tauranga Crossing Shopping Centre, Auckland Airport retail upgrade, SkyCity Hotel Hamilton and the Long Bay Town Centre.
Previously, Rob was a partner in his own architectural practice specialising in supermarkets, bulk retail and transportation projects. He was also the Design Manager for Foodstuffs (Auckland) Ltd, where he was responsible for brand development, design and consultant management. Rob has received various awards for his supermarket and bank designs.
As a Principal of the Group, Rob’s focus is on leading the practice’s design processes, project teams and continual skills development, along with his ongoing work on major retail, commercial and mixed use projects.
Simon Gregory heads Buchan’s London studio and specialises in Retail Master planning, Large Format Retail, Mixed Use and Civic developments across the UK, Europe and Middle East. He has a thorough understanding of the demands of property development and a particular strength in successful project delivery from Concept Design through to Contract Documentation. Simon builds and maintains strong relationships with clients and fellow project team members, contributing to the strength and capability of the practice across all project types and regions.
Gerry Holmes is one of the Group’s key Design Directors. He has taken a lead role on a broad range of significant projects, including mixed use, residential, retail, commercial and master planning. These include the Surfers Paradise Hilton on the Gold Coast, The Palms in Christchurch, Kawana Home Central and Element on Coolum, both on the Sunshine Coast, and a major mixed use project in Qingdao, China.
Since 1991, Ikumi has worked as a Project Manager for numerous non-Japanese clients of financial institutions, logistics industries, pharmaceutical companies and luxury brand groups. She excels in working closely with various stakeholders, architects, engineers, and contractors. Ikumi was involved in cementing the global business alliance between Nikken Sekkei and The Buchan Group, and became a board member of Buchan in October 2016. Since moving to Melbourne in January 2016, Ikumi has sought new collaborative opportunities for Buchan and Nikken Sekkei. She has been extensively involved in business development, particularly in the China market where many mixed-use opportunities are available. Ikumi looks after contractual arrangements and progress of these collaborative projects, and promotes exchange of young architects and study tours between the two entities.
With over 25 years of experience, Marc is recognised as a leader in retail and entertainment design and planning. His project experience includes the design of large scale retail and entertainment projects, commercial and residential developments, theme parks and resorts.
Marc has designed numerous successful, award winning retails centres in Australia and abroad, and has worked in collaboration with major international architectural firms, including KPF, NBBJ, RTKL. He is passionate about retail design and has toured widely to study current retail trends in the USA, Canada, Europe, Dubai, Hong Kong and New Zealand.
Peter Lourey has over 15 years of experience at Buchan and previously owned his own architectural practice and construction business. He is a specialist in master planning, retail and sports venue design, documentation and site services administration. Peter’s architectural expertise and hands on construction experience give him a unique insight into project processes and delivery.
Andrew Mackenzie has been one of Buchan’s leading specialists in the planning and design of retail, entertainment and mixed use facilities for over 23 years, and has built a reputation through award winning projects. Andrew is engaged in all aspects of the design process including early investigative work, initial strategic concepts and planning, through to detailed design development.
In his role as Principal, Harvey Male is responsible for all aspects of the design process and design development, fulfilling the roles of project architect and project creative director on a series of major public and private developments. Harvey has a strong background and international record of achievement in a wide range of architectural projects, with a particular focus on the master planning and design of large scale mixed use projects incorporating residential, hospitality, retail and commercial components. Harvey has a unique offering in his considerable international design experience, having worked in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia.
Robert McFarlane spent almost two decades working for global architecture firm Foster + Partners in London and establishing and managing offices in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.
He has worked on a wide range of international projects at all levels from concept to completion, encompassing master planning, transportation, commercial, mixed-use, residential, hospitality, institutional, civic and cultural buildings. Examples include the Arts & Cultural Quarter, Central Market Redevelopment and Sheikh Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, and the Supreme Court and Marina Bay Business & Financial Centre in Singapore.
Robert is currently the Principal responsible for the planning, upgrade and expansion of Sylvia Park, one of Auckland’s premium metropolitan retail hubs and one of the largest in New Zealand. The long term plans envisage a mixed-use development with public spaces, commercial offices, hotel and residential uses to complement the extension of the retail mall. Robert leads and oversees the design and coordination of the project with the client and consultant team.
Ken Musto is the Managing Director of the Perth office and is a skilled retail planner and designer, and also has specialist expertise in marketing and job management. His projects include Galleria Morley, Cockburn Gateway, Rockingham City, Cable Beach Resort, St Georges Square, and many more. He is taking a leading role on Cockburn Gateway Stage 3, Lakelands and Wellard Town Centre Master planning and Secret Harbour Shopping Centre expansions. Ken is also in charge of Centro Properties’ Shopping Centre Portfolio in WA, which include; Galleria, Maddington, Mandurah, Halls Head, Warnbro, Chapman Way, Warwick, Dianella, Melville, Flinders, Altone Park and Karratha.
Anthony is a Principal of the Sydney office and Design Leader for all Sydney projects. His wealth of retail experience is immense, and complemented by travel researching current trends in customer expectations and experiences.
Anthony was Project Design leader on QIC’s Westpoint Blacktown and oversaw services upgrade works on QIC’s Castle Towers and the Myer delivery team. Anthony's recent projects include the Lakeside Joondalup for Lend Lease, Stockland Shellharbour and Cockburn Gateway, Perth for the Perron Group. His design ability and understanding of the documentation and delivery of large scale retail shopping centre redevelopments mean Anthony is able to lead both design and delivery teams to outstanding retail design solutions that are innovative and buildable.
Brett Saville leads the Group’s Gold Coast office and is a specialist in hotel, resort, residential and mixed use developments. His projects include developments for Conrad Jupiters, Q1 Tower, Aria, Nexus Towers, Peppers Blue on Blue Resort, Magnetic Island and Viridian Noosa. Brett is Project Director currently working on Rosslyn Bay Inn at Yeppoon, Broadbeach Lifestyle Centre and Marina Mirage on the Gold Coast and Itara at Riverway, Townsville in North Queensland.
Phil Schoutrop is a Director and manages The Buchan Group’s Sydney office. He has extensive experience in the design of retail, entertainment, mixed use and hospitality projects. His completed projects include The Wharf at Woolloomooloo, Rhodes Waterside and the Apple Store Sydney. He leads the management of projects in Asia with clients including Ayalaland, CapitaLand, CITIC and DLF, and in Australia he undertakes developments with Stockland, Dexus and Apple.
Bruce Shaw is the Managing Director of Buchan in Melbourne and plays a key role in the strategic direction and leadership of the Firm. In addition, Bruce is a key designer with particular expertise in the design and master planning of major retail and mixed use developments and town centres. He has excellent commercial skills and an ability to maintain strong management control over the design process in order to satisfy the brief, the budget and the programme. Bruce continues to manage major award winning projects and contributes expertise focused on meeting client requirements and achieving optimum commercial outcomes.
Greg Sheehan heads up the Group's Brisbane office and is Managing Director responsible for overseeing the Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand practices. He has significant expertise in retail planning and delivery, and a variety of hospitality, transport and mixed-use project types having led the delivery of Conrad Treasury Casino and Hotel, The Myer Centre and McWhirters mixed-use developments. More recently he led the refurbishment of prominent railway stations including Fortitude Valley, South Brisbane, Eagle Junction and Central as well as numerous sub-regional and neighbourhood shopping centres in Queensland. Greg is currently working with a variety of prominent institutional and private clients leading teams on the expansion of sub-regional and neighbourhood centres including Toowong Village, Australia Fair, Fairfield Central, Grand Plaza, Northern Beaches (Mackay), Nerang Mall and Woolworths, Everton Park.
Ashley Sheppard has a career at Buchan spanning 10 years, and has been pivotal in some of the firm’s most defining retail projects across Australia and the U.K. Ashley has extensive design experience, particularly in large and complex mixed use projects, and consistently delivers projects that reflect international best‐practice. His highly consultative approach results in high quality projects offering planning and operational efficiencies within established budget and program restraints.
Based in the Auckland office, David has overseen the master planning and design phases of large retail and commercial office and mixed use developments for various clients including Kiwi Income Property Trust, NZRPG and Auckland International Airport Ltd. He was Project Director on the recently completed Centre Place redevelopment in Hamilton, and the Travel Careers and Training development at Auckland airport. David has led a variety of different scales of development, including some significant refurbishment and historic re-purposing projects. Of particular note are the award-winning Harbour Town Shopping Centre, Ipswich Riverlink, Victoria Point, Taigum and Sherwood Central. He has a strong focus on the stakeholders’ sensitivities to both design and commerce, drawing the team together to achieve successful outcomes across the spectrum. David is currently leading the project teams on DNZ Westgate, Lynnmall, 5 Mile and other projects throughout New Zealand.
Grant Withers has over 20 years’ experience as a lead design Architect with Buchan and over 14 years as a Director, focusing on large and complex mixed use, retail, entertainment and leisure projects, as well as multi-unit residential, commercial office and hotel projects. Grant is focused on the development and profiling of Buchan as a global architectural practice, promoting the brand in Australia, the Middle East and Asia - particularly retail expertise, developing relationships with key Client groups and designing and delivering significant projects in the region.
Peter Zillman has had many years of experience in the master planning, design and delivery of major retail and entertainment developments throughout Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand. As Project Principal he has led the architectural teams on the Piazza Entertainment and Leisure Precinct at Logan Hyperdome, The Palms Shopping Centre in Christchurch and Home Central, Kawana. He is currently leading projects including the Northern Malls redevelopment at Robina Town Centre, Tweed City redevelopment and key retail developments in New Zealand.
