David Thornton

David Thornton

Principal

Based in the Auckland office, David has overseen the master planning and design phases of large retail and commercial office and mixed use developments for various clients including Kiwi Income Property Trust, NZRPG and Auckland International Airport Ltd. He was Project Director on the recently completed Centre Place redevelopment in Hamilton, and the Travel Careers and Training development at Auckland airport. David has led a variety of different scales of development, including some significant refurbishment and historic re-purposing projects. Of particular note are the award-winning Harbour Town Shopping Centre, Ipswich Riverlink, Victoria Point, Taigum and Sherwood Central. He has a strong focus on the stakeholders’ sensitivities to both design and commerce, drawing the team together to achieve successful outcomes across the spectrum. David is currently leading the project teams on DNZ Westgate, Lynnmall, 5 Mile and other projects throughout New Zealand.

Peter Zillman

Peter Zillman has had many years of experience in the master planning, design and delivery of major retail and entertainment developments throughout Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand. As Project Principal he has led the architectural teams on the Piazza Entertainment and Leisure Precinct at Logan Hyperdome, The Palms Shopping Centre in Christchurch and Home Central, Kawana. He is currently leading projects including the Northern Malls redevelopment at Robina Town Centre, Tweed City redevelopment and key retail developments in New Zealand.

Rob Guild

Rob Guild is an award-winning architect who has delivered iconic and functional designs to some of New Zealand’s leading companies. With 25 years’ experience in design, project leadership, business development, administration and management, Rob joined The Buchan Group in 2013. Since then Rob has been the project architect for the Waitakere Mega Centre, Tauranga Crossing Shopping Centre, Auckland Airport retail upgrade, SkyCity Hotel Hamilton and the Long Bay Town Centre.
Previously, Rob was a partner in his own architectural practice specialising in supermarkets, bulk retail and transportation projects. He was also the Design Manager for Foodstuffs (Auckland) Ltd, where he was responsible for brand development, design and consultant management. Rob has received various awards for his supermarket and bank designs.
As a Principal of the Group, Rob’s focus is on leading the practice’s design processes, project teams and continual skills development, along with his ongoing work on major retail, commercial and mixed use projects.

Robert McFarlane

Robert McFarlane spent almost two decades working for global architecture firm Foster + Partners in London and establishing and managing offices in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.
He has worked on a wide range of international projects at all levels from concept to completion, encompassing master planning, transportation, commercial, mixed-use, residential, hospitality, institutional, civic and cultural buildings. Examples include the Arts & Cultural Quarter, Central Market Redevelopment and Sheikh Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, and the Supreme Court and Marina Bay Business & Financial Centre in Singapore.
Robert is currently the Principal responsible for the planning, upgrade and expansion of Sylvia Park, one of Auckland’s premium metropolitan retail hubs and one of the largest in New Zealand. The long term plans envisage a mixed-use development with public spaces, commercial offices, hotel and residential uses to complement the extension of the retail mall. Robert leads and oversees the design and coordination of the project with the client and consultant team.

With an extensive background in significant civic, residential and retail projects, Raylene has been with The Buchan Group since 2000, initially working on the Christchurch Art Gallery and quickly becoming a key contributor to the practice. In recent years Raylene has been instrumental in helping many of our clients with post-earthquake repair and reconstruction as well as new-build retail town centres and bespoke projects such as Manuka Bay Lodge and the Cathedral Bell Tower. With considerable client and project delivery experience, Raylene brings exceptional management skill to her dual role of project and architectural practice management, providing co-ordinated support to both of our New Zealand offices.

Daren Alderson

Daren is an industry-recognised leader in project delivery, providing both project guidance and technical expertise in our Christchurch office since 2006. Daren is experienced in the design and construction of many project types, including retail, multi-unit residential and commercial, specialising in projects involving high levels of co-ordinated services, such as scientific laboratories. His specific skills include supervision of project teams, site administration and observation, CAD and manual documentation, specification writing and complex problem solving. Daren has most recently led the delivery of the recent significant expansion of The Hub, Hornby Mall and Coastlands Shopping Town, Paraparaumu, as well as undertaking key roles in the Northlands and Bush Inn Shopping Centres’ earthquake remedial and repair works.

James Burgess

James has led projects in the UK, Middle East, the EU and Russia prior to his return to Christchurch to join The Buchan Group in 2015. His specific skills include project design leadership and design management, as well as financial management and reporting. With over 10 years of experience working in both Christchurch and overseas on significant commercial projects, James brings his diverse range of skills and international experience to our practice and is able to contribute greatly to the successful delivery of projects through his analytical approach to design, management and delivery. James has particular strengths in the design development of mixed use projects, including heritage, office, hotel, retail and apartment components. He is currently leading project teams for Coastlands Square, Coastlands Shopping Town, Takiri commercial buildings, Wainuiomata Shopping Centre redevelopment and the Christchurch International Airport Lancaster Centre retail development.

Charlotte Cochrane

Associate & Head of Interiors NZ

Based in our Auckland office, Charlotte heads the Interiors team of The Buchan Group New Zealand. Working alongside architects Charlotte’s attention to detail provides out clients' interior spaces with a point of difference and innovative design, covering projects of many types and scales throughout New Zealand. With The Buchan Group completing the inner city Christchurch retail precinct of innovative design made from shipping containers, Charlotte headed the interior design project of Ballantynes Department Store’s relocated ‘Contemporary Lounge’ housed within 12 containers. Using her interior retail expertise to assist in re-establishing retail facilities in the CBD, a welcoming and vibrant retail precinct was created. Since completing this project Charlotte has been involved with further developments in retail design for Ballantynes Department Store with the opening of their ‘Fashion Atrium’ and ‘Contemporary Lounge’ featuring New Zealand and international brands including Karen Walker, Juliette Hogan, Kate Sylvester, Ted Baker, Ben Sherman, Miss Selfridge and Moochi. Charlotte is currently working on future developments within the Canterbury region as well as Auckland’s DNZ Westgate and LynnMall. Charlotte works closely with our International offices, which keeps her up to date with global trends.

Gavin Gillson

Gavin has been based in our Christchurch office since joining us in 2012. With training in Building Science and Construction, his technical expertise has allowed him to undertake key roles in the delivery of retail, healthcare, education, residential and civic projects in New Zealand and the UK. Gavin has quickly proven himself capable of managing the documentation and delivery of a variety of project types. Gavin has played key roles in The Hub, Hornby Mall, The Landing at Wigram Skies and the Wigram Skies Medical projects, and led the delivery of the Meridian Mall refurbishment, Ballantynes interiors projects and earthquake upgrades at several buildings in Southpark Estate Business Park.
