Stage 1 of QIC’s $665 million expansion of Eastland Shopping Centre was opened by the Hon Julie Bishop MP today, forming the new heart of Ringwood. The Centre is set to become one of Melbourne’s most progressive and exciting urban shopping, entertainment and leisure destinations.
The Buchan Group, in collaboration with Seventh Wave, provided architectural services for the development which blends striking architecture and innovative design to deliver an eagerly anticipated world-class shopping and entertainment precinct and authentic Town Centre for Ringwood.
Principal Grant Withers said the design for the centre was central to the community. “We created what is essentially not just a retail centre, but an entertainment and leisure focal point for the residents of Ringwood. The new Eastland offers a curated fusion of food, fashion and lifestyle brands and introduces a seamless integration of art, culture, learning and events.”
The Centre’s strong community focus is woven throughout its timeless design, celebrating Eastland’s proximity to the Yarra Ranges. “We employed the use of high quality tactile finishes, natural stone, patterned detailing and soft lighting to reflect the natural beauty of the surrounding region,” said Grant.
The revamp introduces David Jones to the centre with a contemporary new fitout as well as a host of international brands including Uniqlo, H&M and Victoria’s Secret. The expansion has doubled the size of the existing centre to approximately 131,000m² as well as providing 5,300 car spaces. The expansion is integrated with the new Ringwood Station, creating safe, convenient access for visitors.
A new, fully integrated Maroondah City Council library, Realm, also opened today, forming a key part of the development. The state-of-the-art community facility incorporates a distinctive design, innovative technology and services. The Buchan Group, QIC and Seventh Wave designed Realm to be the centrepiece of the new Ringwood Town Square, interacting with open air gathering spaces, cafes and shops.
Stage 2 of the expansion is expected to open in mid 2016.
