The multi-million dollar Melbourne Park Redevelopment was the focus of the Property Council of Australia’s latest seminar. Moderated by Huy Chau, Buchan’s Business Development Manager and the Property Council's Future Directions Committee Chair, the seminar examined the development’s future stages and the importance of the facility to the State.
Huy led a panel discussion with guest speakers Zorana Zanoskar, Design Manager, Major Projects Victoria; Peter Bowtell, Australasia Leader Buildings Practice, Arup; and Joel Stringer, Head of Design and Project Management, Victoria and South Australia, Lendlease.
The discussion surrounded Melbourne and Olympic Parks’ current status as one of the biggest sports and entertainment precincts in the world, leveraged against the growing popularity of the Australian Open and the need to establish the precinct as an unbeatable sports and events venue.

Buchan and Japanese firm Wonderwall’s design for Emporium Melbourne has taken out the Sir Osborn McCutcheon Award in Commercial Architecture in this year’s Victorian Architecture Awards.
Attracting a high calibre of entrants, the Victorian chapter of the annual Australian Institute of Architecture Awards program celebrates excellence in design and recognises the innovative work of Victorian architects.
Managing Director Bruce Shaw said the award was testament to the unique and ambitious nature of the project and reinforces Buchan’s expertise in reimagining commercial and retail environments.
“We are incredibly proud to have received this award in recognition of our specialist knowledge and innovation in architecture and design,” said Bruce.
“The design for Emporium merges history with modern retail principles to deliver a truly memorable leisure experience to the Melbourne CBD. Every nuance and aesthetic subtlety employed in the design contributes to the destinational quality of the Centre. It was a pleasure working with the team on this collaborative design journey that has resulted in such a striking and iconic development.”
Emporium forms the final link in the pedestrian chain of Australia’s most powerful CBD retail precinct, linking Myer, David Jones, Melbourne Central, The Strand Arcade and Melbourne’s GPO. The design is characterised by an interconnected, vertical retail environment reflecting the character and shopping experience of Melbourne’s famous network of laneways.
The jury described the project as “mature, self-assured and elegant, with moments of joy found in the chocolate ripple ceiling and amenities.”
Winners were announced at the annual Awards Presentation Dinner on Friday 24 June.

Congratulations to four of Buchan’s emerging leaders from around Australia who are taking part in this year’s 100 Women in Property sponsorship program.
Victoria Dragas is being sponsored by Huy Chau in Victoria; Malou Ellis is sponsored by Anthony Palamara in NSW; and Emma Ridings and Anne Rigby are sponsored by Brett Saville in Queensland.
Led by the Property Council of Australia’s diversity committee, the program aims to recognise and celebrate leading female property professionals around the country.

The Buchan Group’s entry in the Living Building Challenge design competition has taken out the 2016 People’s Choice Award and runner up for the Power for Life Award. The entry was one of three finalists chosen at the Living Futures Institute’s unConference held in Seattle in May.
Coordinated by the Living Future Institute of Australia (LFIA), in collaboration with Principal Partner Frasers Property Australia, the design competition challenged participants to design a sustainable shopping centre that meets rigorous environmental standards. Frasers’ Brickworks shopping centre site in Burwood, Melbourne was the subject of the competition.
Buchan’s entry, entitled ‘For the Common Good – A Restart to Retailing,’ was designed in collaboration with Grün Consulting, Inhabit Group, RushWright Associates and The Space Agency, and inspired primarily by Passive House principles.
The development proposal focused on the revitalisation of Burwood’s retail offering, and the creation of a vibrant residential community based around an economically and sustainably viable passive house centre.
Principal Harvey Male said the award recognised Buchan’s excellence in retail design combined with a broader commitment to placemaking, liveability and wellness balanced with commercial principles.
“It was an honour to receive the People’s Choice Award for our design and a pleasure collaborating with the team to create a concept that challenges the traditional idea of a shopping centre,” said Harvey.
“Our vision was to create a series of active and liveable places which will provide for the local community. The design intent was to substantially improve retailing in terms of both its offer and ability for social interaction, residential diversity and choice, as well as creating employment opportunities. Our response intended to set a new benchmark in inner city sustainable retailing, living and well-being.”
The winners were announced at the Melbourne School of Design on the 16th June.

Rosslyn Apartments opened to the public in June, unveiling an exciting and cohesive new residential development within the emerging architecture of West Melbourne. Situated on The Buchan Group’s former studio site at 133 Rosslyn Street, the development paves the way for an exemplary, highly-considered architectural form within the industrial fabric of the area.
The 9 storey complex, for Starland Pacific Group, delivered in conjunction with Development and Project Managers, PDS Group, will comprise a series of one, two and three bedroom elegant apartments.
Buchan’s design for the development sensitively responds to the surrounding urban grain and context of the area. A robust selection of materials has been carefully considered to provide a sense of depth and grain, capturing the essence of the site’s industrial context and imbuing its historical DNA in the design.
The façade provides a sense of movement through the glimmering reflection of sunlight filtered through the prominent Rosslyn Street tree scape. It is envisaged the building will transfigure and modulate, reflecting the colour, textures and hues of the changing seasons, expressed through a detailed collage of colour tones and reflective glazing.
Construction on the development is expected to begin later this year.

“Our development proposal provides a significant opportunity for the revitalisation of Burwood’s retail offering, and the creation of a vibrant residential community based around an economically and sustainably viable passive house centre,” said Architect Aleksander Borek.
“We have essentially designed a place to live, shop, eat and meet that does not cost the earth but supports residents in becoming active citizens in their community.”
The finalists were selected by more than 1,000 attendees at the Living Future Un-Conference in Seattle, where submissions for the Brickworks Living Building Challenge design competition were displayed for the first time.
The winner will be announced at an awards night on June 16 at the Melbourne School of Design.

设计总监David McCarroll先生表示：我们的目标是通过在已建成的城市环境中通过交叠的、重复的几何形式去复制自然界的自然形式，并在这过程中自然地设定节奏和速度。
” 优雅整洁细致的地面、中庭边缘、天花板设计、标识、室内景观元素都赋予了一种明亮清新的空间设计。清爽、干净、简单的细节使得空间本身发光。
David先生也提到：我们很高兴能和本地设计师合同，为该区域的购物和娱乐选择提供重大贡献。

The Buchan Group recently hosted the 2016 Mixed-Use Symposium, aimed at bringing together key industry colleagues to explore current and emerging trends in global mixed-use developments.
A panel of leading industry specialists explored opportunities to enhance current assets and to unlock new development sites with transportation nodes, retail, residential, hospitality, hotels and commercial offices. A key focus was transit oriented developments and lessons learnt from benchmark projects across Europe, Canada, the United States, and Japan.
The expert panel was made up of Ian Thomas, the Chairman of Canadian based Thomas Consultants; Kiyoyoshi Okumori, Executive Officer of Nikken Sekkei in Japan; Richard Brice, Director of EY and David Forbes, Principal at The Buchan Group. Collectively they discussed mixed-use developments and precincts in Victoria, best case practices around the world, and integration of these projects with transit oriented developments.

The Mt. Beautiful Tasting Room in Cheviot, NZ, opened its doors to the public on Tuesday, March 3rd 2015.
Mt. Beautiful is a premium North Canterbury wine brand grown and produced at Spotswood, 9 kilometres north of Cheviot. The tasting room based in Cheviot showcases it’s varieties in Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Chardonnay to the local community and tourists.
Sympathetic to the timber themed restaurant the fitout uses a blend of natural materials to reflect the environment of the vineyard. The polished concrete ‘greywacke’ counter dips to follow the alignment of the gully across which the vineyard spans. Natural light floods the space showcasing the heritage display and offered wines.
“We are very excited to finally have a local presence to showcase our passion for growing and producing unique wines from the North Canterbury area,” says Robert Watkins, CEO of Mt. Beautiful. “We hope to add to the vibrant Cheviot community by bringing in locals and passing guests to enjoy our wines and other town attractions.”
