'sub|version' was an innovative mapped water projection, chosen from a record number of submissions to be part of the Vivid 2012 Festival in May/June 2012.
Positioned near the northern Overseas Passenger Terminal tower, the installation extended the virtual performance into the waters of Circular Quay itself and featured elements usually found only on land, including high-contrast people and scenes submerged in symmetry with the spectators. A spotlight revealed forms, figures and patterns hidden in the depths.
The projector was positioned 14m above the quayside, eliminating glare to the viewing area and to water traffic. Content was carefully planned and adjusted to accommodate tidal variations, water penetration and challenging light, contrast and vertical focus loss.
Images of sub|version were featured on the Festival's website, and were among the most 'liked' in their extensive social media campaign.
The Buchan Group was responsible for the concept design, mapping, motion capture, all content production and point-of-view correction. Haycom AV provided projection, media server and installation.
