Overview

Buchan’s design for The Strand refreshes the centre’s image and feel to create a destination for food lovers and shopaholics alike.

The project comprises a reworking of a podium to craft a more successful retail offer. This reworking looks to reactivate the street and contribute to the overall liveliness of the precinct. Entries are upgraded and targeted at ‘start up’ retail tenants offering a range of merchandise suited to the local community. The connection to level one is also strengthened with escalator and stairs to establish an important connection to the street. The main area of concern was the upper retail level that was been largely unoccupied for many years. A full-range supermarket has been inserted into the back end of level one to increase foot traffic to this level. The level one area now showcases a 300-seat restaurant court, designed to harness the natural, sweeping beach views.

The standout feature is the new façade with large-scale, openable glass louvres to maximise the views over the park and beach. It also provides natural ventilation of the space when weather conditions are breezy.
