Residents eagerly follow Queensgate Shopping Centre redevelopment

As a hub for the Lower Hutt community, progress on the redevelopment of Queensgate Shopping Centre is being eagerly followed by local residents who are out of the house and hitting the shops following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions across New Zealand.

Responding to damage obtained in the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake and subsequent demolition, the re-development will see the north-eastern corner of the centre reinstated with the cinema and car park building but with vast improvement to the external façade, pedestrian experience and vehicular circulation. Taking inspiration from the neighbouring Hutt River to inform the concept and material selection, the design reflects the council’s vision of a centre which is authentic to its local surrounds. The concept also provides added flexibility to meet the council’s aspirations to integrate future developments alongside the existing centre.
