Taking a playful approach to colour and geometry, Buchan’s design of the café and patisserie fit-out reimagines the brands ‘classic blue’ aesthetic with striking results. Representing a design evolution for the brand, the traditional hue is paired with a pale blue that immediately softens the design and perfectly complements the sage ceiling and tonal pink tile wall. Along with a terrazzo communal tabletop and flooring, the colour palette lends the design a European sensibility that’s in keeping with Melbourne’s cosmopolitan style.
Elsewhere, the pale blue counter’s fluted timber profile playfully breaks up the structure’s surface and deconstructs its bulk. In contrast, the pink tiles are a mix of rectangle and square shapes complemented with a darker pink grout, lending visual interest without introducing distraction. It’s a carefully curated composition of colour, form and texture and the Buchan team has been deliberate in ensuring the overall scheme feels richly multi-layered.
The design of each Jolly Miller location is carefully considered so that the scheme champions the core elements of the brand while also maintaining its own distinct identity. Buchan worked closely alongside The Jolly Miller Group utilising collaborative workshops to create a set of guidelines to ensure consistency in both aesthetics and construction documentation was achieved throughout the roll-out.
