Overview

The Spotlight development enhances the role of South Melbourne market as a community asset with frontages designed to create vibrant street activity.

The building’s design adopts the area’s character and heritage. The concept and treatment of the building reflects the predominant nature of the neighbourhood and streetscape, typified by utilitarian low level commercial and industrial buildings. Its zero-setback street alignment, two-storey podium form and material choice, comprising of face brickwork, bluestone, timber, metal and glazing, reflect the mixed-use character of the area.

The ten-level building plus basement includes four levels of car parking, two retail levels, three floors of office space, a function room and rooftop terrace. Three office levels are configured around a central, landscaped glass atrium space under a curved roof, a glazed lift shaft through atrium and singer stringer feature stairs. This ensures abundant natural light and a strong visual connection between levels. The south west corner of the development incorporates the west and south facades of the existing heritage-listed Red Bears Pub.

The result is sculptural built form that is a focal point within the South Melbourne Central Precinct.
